!SOLD! THIS IS SO WICKED AWESOME! I WANT IT! I WANT IT!
And kids, there's also a cool new deal on the Microsoft Office suite for students! Thats right! You can now purchase Microsoft Office at an amazing discount and start using Word for a very cool reasonable price!
1) it's real, as unbelievable as that sounds. Arstechnica has a review up if anyone actually wants to read it.
2) computer science students usually get MS software for free nerdlord. you have to sign up for MSDNAA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Aliance).
I got Visual Studio, Vista 64, XP 64, Visio, some VM software, an XNA membership (which will be handy if I ever want to develop a game for the 360) and a bunch of other shit for free through Concordia. You should ask around for UQAM. I'd be surprised if they didn't have something.
My favorite line was: "It's from Microsoft, so it's easy to use, right?"
WRONG!!! ...because it's from Microsoft.
I've been using Vista at work and, BLOODY HELL, what a piece of shit.
Also, aside from having the lamest name ever, Songsmith sounds like a synthesizer from 1983. I used to make better music with my mini Donkey Kong Arcade.
My microsoft office ad was a joke, kinda. I saw it on the streets where they offered a discount on Office for students. Considering the availability of open office, I thought it was ridiculous. Of course I didnt expect you to understand Dildo, as you told me a dozen times before: you dont understand anything I say. Which leaves me in a state of perplexitude.
They should have pulled a reverse Mac vs PC add... get Hodkins and Long look alikes and reverse the roles.
And yeah, I've seen those adds for special discounts. Problem with the latest office is that it supports docx formats while open office doesn't - at least not natively. (because MS hasn't released the specifications yet. It was meant to be based on OXML originally but apparently they changed a bunch of shit at the last minute). Anyways, someone is going to have to reverse engineer that shit and write a proper plugin. Oh, and Open Office's dictionary isn't great.
Can OOoBasic make ADO connections? The fact that I have trouble finding out online makes me skiddish. Where's the online community support? Also, Is there an Open Project or Open Visio with objects that can easily be manipulated from another 'Open' module? I know I'm asking for a lot here but I'm not fucking around with these tools.
.NET is MS only right now and they're not open sourcing their assembly. there's the mono project which is an OSS version of .NET but it's not quite mature yet. And of course nobody but MS uses VB... Python has taken over a lot of the shit that VB used to do. I also hear good things about Ruby but that might be completely independent.
But the simple answer to your question is that the OSS stuff isn't going to do exactly what MS does. It does things differently. Like there are visio like products that are completely free... they're not as good though but I just used visio for flow charts.

So that's what happened to Jeff from Today's Special.
On another note, I find this commercial wasn't too far fetched. The coffee shop scene seemed pretty accurate.
i'm not sure it's a spoof, honestly
wait... that's an SNL thing right?
i mean, it has to be...
Thoughout the video, I was sure some wicked joke was gonna bust out. Then it didn't. Then I went to microsoft.com and...*shudder* it's for real!
That makes me want to take a really long shower to get rid of this dirty feeling.

Microsoft products aren't THAT bad... VISTA 64 is actually solid. the 32 bit version is complete shit though.
But I would rather compose music with Mario Paint.

You gotta understand though, creating an ad for this thing must have been hard stuff.
How would you have done it?
I think I would have gotten Alice Cooper singing that little girl's song.

Here is probably the best place to ask your questions.
Here or in Syco's tent this saturday.
You're coming right?
