La Bête Lumineuse

Here's a documentary I caught on the NFB site about a month ago. It takes place in 1982. You can tell that the documentary started one way and then totally shot off in another direction. It's worth watching in its entirety (127 minutes). I watched it in two parts.

It's about a hunting club, and the hunting experience in Quebec. The description that the NFB gives is pretentious, so just ignore it. It's more about alcohol, bullying, and a bunch of degenerates in the woods.

I love the scene at 93:05 when the dude gets scared by a woodpecker.

So I finished watching the movie and I really enjoyed it but I really don't think these guys are degenerates. They work hard and humbly do their part. And how could you not love the drink when in a log cabin in the depths of Maniwaki?

The only degenerate and real alcoholic is Albert. He shows up, a representative of the world of nationally funded intellectuals, and vomits his condescension through the guise of camaraderie every time he gets drunk. He also barks orders to command attention towards his capricious whims and unstable emotions. Finally, he quickly becomes complacent when actual chores need to be done. And then he's surprised when he becomes the proverbial moose.

Bernard said it best, when you go hunting, you shut yer trap. Now that's poetry right there.
